The overview
The Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in southwestern Rwanda and offers beautiful scenery surrounded by tea plantations. The Nyungwe forest is one of Africa’s last remaining complete tropical forests. It is home to Chimpanzees and the largest colobus monkey troops known anywhere. This three-day Rwanda chimp trekking safari will provide you with an up-close and personal experience of following chimps in Nyungwe Forest Park. This safari is designed exclusively for chimp trekking and canopy walks. However, depending on the time available on the final day, you can choose to add one extra activity before returning to Kigali.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe forest park through Ethnographic Museum
After breakfast, your will drive from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest, with a stop at the Huye ethnographic museum. The ethnographic museum is also Rwanda’s national museum and exhibits historical and cultural features of Rwanda over the years. It offers tools and information to help you learn about Rwanda’s rich history and cultural heritage of Rwanda. After the museum tour, you will have lunch before continuing on your journey to Nyungwe Forest. After Huye, the roads to Nyungwe are generally winding, providing breathtaking vistas of the famous “thousand hills.” You will arrive at the hotel in the late evening for dinner and a night’s rest.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and afternoon canopy walk
After an early breakfast, proceed to the Park’s headquarters in Uwinka, where you will be briefed by the park’s head ranger and divided into trekking groups of 8 people each. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park begins at 8 a.m., so try to be on time. After a briefing, set out on a 2-6 hour hike into the forest in search of these chimps. Around 80 habituated chimps can be found in Nyungwe Park. While following chimps in the jungle, you may encounter other primate species such as the black and white colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey, golden monkey, and other monkey species. Once you have located the chimps, you will be permitted to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat watching the way they feed and behave. Afterward, return to your lodge for lunch and afternoon rest.
In the late afternoon, you will go for the stunning two-hour walk across the canopy walkway: a 160-meter bridge suspended between giant trees, 70 meters above the forest floor. You’ll have incredible views of the forest’s upper canopies and spot monkeys and birds and return back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali for departure
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge today, and take a scenic drive back to Kigali city. Depending on the time of your flight, continue to the airport for your return flight home or to the hotel for the night stay which marks the end of the remarkable 3 days Rwanda Chimpanzee Tour
