Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Trek from Mihunga (1651m) gate to Nyabitaba camp (2600m)
It is a pleasure meeting you, this morning, thanks for Putting Rwenzori on your bucket list, and with us as a Nutrenest safaris mountaineering service, we’re going to provide beautiful service to your safari, our lovely clients. You’re going to enjoy the seven days trip with your well-trained guides. And you shall enjoy also the seven six vegetation zones in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. And the first step is the inhabited foothill Zone. Then I will be telling you one by one, as we are continuing with our amazing trek in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
Like now, this is day one. You need to wake up early in the cool air at the Nyakalengija base camp. You meet your guides and escorts and soon set off on the five-hour trek to Nyabitaba camp at 2600m above sea level. You walk through a dense forest canopy viewing a variety of birds, some monkey species. You may take a chance to see the mountain elephants and from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba, it is a 6.5 km walk. This is where you shall also get a chance of seeing the three-horned chameleon, black and white colobus monkeys, and the blue monkeys, also the vervet monkeys. And you shall also enjoy the cool air of river mubuku, river Nyamwamba and River Mahama. Then the first day takes you to Nyabitaba of course, where you get your first night and the first dish, and when you are at Nyabitaba, you get a clear view of the four tropics again. Then here you sleep under the canopies of the podocarpus latifolia type of trees. Then in the evening take dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Nyabitaba camp to John Matte (3505m)
In the morning, wake up early as day two is considered the longest walk in the Rwenzori Mountains National park, and after taking your morning breakfast, that is day two at the gloomy but breathtaking, beautiful four tropics greet you in the morning and shadow your right shoulder as you cross the coffee ways of the Mubako and Jocko Rivers by the Kaashifa Bridge 2,560 meters above sea level. Then after crossing the Kaashifa bridge, it shall be a climbing and descending through the bamboo forest moss and leached fostered first trees leads to Nyamileju hut and it is the end of the bamboo forest zone and the start of the Heather or penny zone the fourth zone when you’re going for a seven days trek in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, then in the afternoon sun often brings a thundering glimpse of gold strike Margherita and Alexandria peaks and you will enjoy seeing the snows and from Nyabitaba to John Matte this takes, 7 to 8 hours walk 7.5km as day two is considered as the longest walk in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. And then the second night, of course, you spend it in the Heather or Pioneer zone and the John Matte is at 3505 meters above sea level.
Day 3: John Matte to Bujuku Camp (3962m)
And then the next morning, as you’re leaving John Matte, you walk through the Bujuku valley and this takes you to Bujuku camp and in between John Matte and Bujuku camp, the beautiful plants like the tussocks and also the boardwalks also you enjoy the jumping from each task to another one, and from John Matte to Bujuku takes five hours and five kilometers walk and Bujuku is in the middle of the three snowcapped peaks Mount Peak, Mount Stanley, and Mount Baker. So when you are in Bujuku, you need to put on your warm clothes because it tends to get cold here because of these snowcapped mountains. Bujuku is on the shores of Lake Bujuku and when you are here at Bujuku, it is the end of the Heather zone and the start of the Afro Alpine zone, the fifth zone in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
Day 4: Bujuku Camp to Elena Camp (4023m)
Then from Bujuku, you continue to Elena camp, and from Bujuku, the trail tends to get a bit muddy and this takes you to another resting point around here when you here resting, you get a clear view of Bujuku camp, you get a clear view of the Bujuku valley, you get a clear view of the lake and Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Alexandria. When you’re here resting before, you continue to Elena camp and after a short rest, you take the right. As the left descends you down through Kitandara Lakes camp and then the fourth night is always here at Elena 4023m above sea level.
Day 5: Elena camp to the Margherita Peak (5109m) and descent to Kitandara Lakes camp (4023m)
Elena is the starting point for summiting the Margherita Peak, the topmost layer of Uganda. So when you are at Elena Recheck, you are climbing equipment with your guides and it depends to the weather. You either start at 3 or 4 am, then you hit the road to the roof of Uganda. Then from Elena to Margheritah takes around four hours, then coming down two hours. Then from the peak, you take your lunch at Elena and continue down through Kitandara lakes camp it’s where you spend the fifth night, and it has got two lakes, the upper lake, and the lower lake. Sometimes we call them twin lakes, and it is just three meters from Kitandara camp, and it is on the border of Congo and Uganda.
Day 6: Descend from Kitandara camp to Guyeoman (3500m)
The next morning day six as you leave Kitandara, the trail descends and ascends steeply up to fresh field pass and the fresh field when you are here, you get a clear view of the homesteads of people in Congo and you may get a clear view of Mount Baker. You get a clear view of Wiseman’s Peak when you are here at Fresh Field Pass. Then after that, you shall come down and as you’re coming down through Diamond Camp, you shall be seeing a lot of mountain red Duikers and also the mountain rock hyraxes type of animals and this descent takes you through the Bujongolo rock shelter. Bujongolo is a historical rock, this is where the Duke of Bruce slept when they did an expedition in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, you say this is where they were based and it was a group of Italians and that was in 1906. Then after that, you shall come to Guyeoman for your sixth night, and from Kitandara to Guyeoman, takes six hours walks and also six kilometers and Guyeoman is at 3500m above sea level. And Guyeoman is always your last night when you do with us your trek in the Rwenzori Mountains and you need to associate with your porters because when you are Guyeoman, it is always your last night with your group. So make sure you associate with them, take a lot of time with them share stories do’s and don’ts in the Rwenzori Mountains.
Day 7: Guyeoman Descent and transfer to Hotel
Then day seven leave Guyeoman to camp Nyabitaba for five hours, then take lunch at Nyabitaba. Then after lunch, descend down to the gates. Then again you get transferred by your tour guide to the next destination from Guyeoman, Nyabitaba, and Mihunga gate. It is an eight-hour walk, meaning if you leave Guyeoman at around 8 am, you get out from the mountains at around 3 or 4 pm. carrental4x4 Guide will transfer you to the hotel for hot showers and a goodnight’s sleep.
