Brief information about Lake Mburo national park
Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, located around 240 kilometers from Kampala and only 30 kilometers from Mbarara, Western Uganda’s largest town. It is roughly 290 kilometers from Entebbe airport to Lake Mburo National Park. The national park is surrounded by four major districts in Uganda: Mbarara town, Lyantonde, Isingiro North, and Kiruhura.
Lake Mburo National Park was established as a regulated hunting area in 1933 and was later converted to a game reserve in 1963. The area was dominated by Banyankore pastoralists (also known as Bahima), who kept on herd their cattle and other livestock in the reserve until the Obote regime gave it national park status in 1983. The decision to designate Lake Mburo Reserve as a National Park was made in part to punish the Banyankore, who were suspected of assisting anti-Obote insurgents.
Lake Mburo National Park is a unique site with a diverse ecosystem and abundant wildlife, particularly in its western region, which has Rocky Ridges and forested gorges, narrow bands of lush, riparian forests, and much more. It is home to 68 animal species but lacks elephants and lions. Because there are no lions, tourists may freely approach close to the animals and enjoy close encounters with them. The park features a variety of birds that are visible to guests as they fly across the sky. Among the species spotted in this park are the uncommon shoebill, stork, African fin foot, pelican, and heron
