Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common mountaineering questions

What fitness level is needed for Kilimanjaro?

No technical climbing required but good physical fitness is essential. Walking 5-8 hours daily at altitude. We recommend 3-6 months of cardio training, hiking with a loaded backpack, and stair climbing.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for beginners?

Marangu (Coca-Cola route) is the easiest with hut accommodation. Machame is the most scenic and popular. Lemosho offers the best acclimatization profile. Our guides help you choose based on fitness and preferences.

What is included in the expedition price?

Park entry fees, professional mountain guides and porters, all meals on the mountain, camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mats), airport transfers, pre and post-climb hotel accommodation, and summit certificate.

How long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Routes range from 5-9 days. We recommend 7-8 days for optimal acclimatization and higher summit success rates. Shorter routes have lower success rates due to insufficient altitude adjustment.

What about altitude sickness?

Our guides monitor symptoms daily using pulse oximeters. We follow pole pole (slowly slowly) philosophy. Diamox is available. Proper acclimatization days are built into itineraries. Emergency evacuation protocols are in place.

What gear do I need to bring?

Sturdy waterproof hiking boots (broken in), layered clothing for -15C to +30C range, warm sleeping bag liner, headlamp, trekking poles, sun protection, and personal medications. We provide a detailed packing list upon booking.

Is the Rwenzori trek harder than Kilimanjaro?

Yes, Rwenzori is generally more challenging with steeper terrain, muddier trails, and more technical sections. It requires better fitness and some scrambling ability. But the unique vegetation and fewer crowds make it incredibly rewarding.

Can I combine climbing with safari?

Absolutely! Our most popular combinations pair Kilimanjaro with Serengeti/Ngorongoro safaris, or Rwenzori with gorilla trekking in Bwindi. We handle all logistics seamlessly.

What is the summit success rate?

On our recommended 7-8 day Kilimanjaro routes, we achieve 90%+ summit success rates. This is well above the 65% average because we prioritize proper acclimatization and experienced guides.

When is the best time to climb?

January-March and June-October offer the driest conditions. December-February is also good. Avoid the heavy rains of April-May. Rwenzori is best June-August and December-February.

How do I train for a mountain expedition?

Start 3-6 months before. Focus on cardiovascular fitness (running, cycling), hiking with a weighted backpack, stair climbing, and core strength. Practice walking 4-6 hours consecutively. We provide a detailed training guide upon booking.
