Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon Kigali city tour including the Genocide Memorial — a moving and important experience.

Drive north to gorilla country.

Drive to Musanze near Volcanoes National Park. Afternoon at leisure with views of the Virunga volcanic chain. Evening briefing for tomorrow's gorilla trek.

Volcanoes NP — Gorilla Trekking

Trek to see mountain gorillas.

Morning briefing then trek into the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains. Spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Rwanda's gorilla permits include some of the best trekking conditions in Africa.

Volcanoes NP — Golden Monkey Tracking

Track golden monkeys in bamboo forest.

Morning golden monkey tracking — these playful, endangered primates are endemic to the Virunga mountains. Afternoon visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or optional twin lakes hike.

Drive to beautiful Lake Kivu.

Scenic drive to Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes. Afternoon relaxation — kayaking, swimming or lakeside walks.

Drive to Nyungwe for chimp trekking.

Drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Afternoon canopy walk — suspended 50m above the forest floor with incredible views. Or optional chimpanzee trek.

Drive east to Akagera for Big Five.

Drive across Rwanda to Akagera National Park — the country's only Big Five park. Afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema for hippos, crocodiles and water birds.

Morning game drive, return to Kigali.

Early morning game drive in Akagera for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffaloes. Drive back to Kigali for your departure flight.
