Depart Nairobi and drive north through the lush central highlands to Mt Kenya National Park. Arrive at the Serena Mountain Lodge, set in a dense montane forest at 2,194 m altitude. The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick that attract elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife throughout the night. Settle in and enjoy an afternoon nature walk through the forest.
A full day exploring the Mt Kenya ecosystem. Morning guided nature walk through the indigenous forest, spotting colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and a rich array of birdlife including sunbirds and turacos. Afternoon trout fishing in the crystal-clear mountain streams — a unique and tranquil experience. The lodge’s waterhole viewing deck is perfect for evening wildlife watching.
After breakfast, descend from the highland forests and drive north to the semi-arid Samburu National Reserve. The dramatic change in landscape — from lush montane forest to rugged, dry bushland — is striking. Arrive at your lodge on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in time for an afternoon game drive. Begin searching for the Samburu Special Five.
Full day exploring Samburu with morning and afternoon game drives. Search for the rare “Special Five” — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. Samburu is also renowned for leopard sightings, large elephant herds along the river, and prides of lion. Optional visit to a local Samburu community village (at extra cost).
After breakfast, depart Samburu and drive south through the central highlands to Lake Nakuru National Park. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon. Lake Nakuru is a soda lake famous for vast flocks of flamingos and is one of Kenya’s best destinations for spotting both black and white rhinos. Enjoy an evening game drive around the lakeshore.
Full day exploring Lake Nakuru National Park. The alkaline lake attracts millions of flamingos, creating a stunning pink fringe along the shore. The park is also a rhino sanctuary — both black and white rhinos can be spotted here. Look out for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, tree-climbing lions, waterbuck, and over 450 bird species.
Depart Lake Nakuru after breakfast and drive west through the Mau Escarpment to the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve. Arrive at your lodge perched on a hilltop overlooking the Mara plains. Afternoon game drive through the vast grasslands — the Mara is Kenya’s most celebrated wildlife destination, home to the Big Five and host to the Great Migration.
Full day in the Maasai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. Explore different sectors of this vast ecosystem — the Mara River for hippos and crocodiles, the open plains for cheetah hunts, and the acacia woodlands for leopard sightings. Optional hot air balloon safari at dawn (at extra cost). Optional visit to a Maasai cultural village.
After a final early morning game drive in the Mara, return to the lodge for breakfast and check out. Drive east through the Great Rift Valley back to Nairobi. Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the afternoon for your onward flight. End of an extraordinary 9-day safari covering five of Kenya’s most diverse ecosystems.
